Hey Day is the follow up to a duo of EPs released last year, Tomorrow and Everything I Once Knew, and the album was recorded at Hot Tracks by Matt Smith here in Austin. The recording is no different from the group’s previous efforts in that Reynolds and crew dip into different territories; soft and sentimental singer/songwriter folk, animated and garagey rock and roll. There’s even a slight country influence. A handful of Reynolds’ influences are also easily discerned in the music on Hey Day, like Nick Lowe and The Replacements, who wrote a song about another one of Reynolds’ songwriting influences, Alex Chilton of Big Star.
Christian Blunda says:
This 2010 release from Austin's Leatherbag is an earnest answer to what is lacking in today's "modern rock" world. In an era of fleeting trends and high technology, Leatherbag carries the torch for genuine rock, exchanging gimmicky production, for solid guitar-pop. Randy Reynolds' vocals are deeply rooted in americana, tipping a hat to a few of rock n roll's forefathers, yet all-the-while maintaining a fresh sound. For a shining example of their honest songwriting and catchy guitar hooks, find "Lines" on the free YAWMA 2010 sampler.
