Featuring brothers Chris and Cody Groom, Berkeley Heights is trying to be both a nod to the past and a look towards the future. By combining songwriting structures from synth pop, classic rock, alternative and new wave the band is hard to categorize. Take a shot of the Beach Boys, mix it with some New Order, then toss in equal parts Postal Service and the Everly Brothers and you come close. Regardless of instrumentation the band is concerned foremost with great songs. Catchy chord progressions, memorable hooks and tight arrangements are the bands mainstays. If you are afraid of pop music the band might not be for you but don't be surprised if you catch yourself humming along. Officially formed in 2007 after many nights of drunken musical banter, the project was an idea that had been gestating for the previous two years to no fruition. Finally, in August of 2007, the brothers decided to sit down and start demoing some songs to see if the idea would work. The song "Blind Eyes" was the result and immediately the brothers knew they were onto something. The song was instantly likable, catchy and fresh sounding. Even more promising, as far as the brothers were concerned, was the way their voices matched up perfectly for harmonies. Sufficiently encouraged, the pair decided to press on. Six months of late weekend sessions, countless pints at the local pub and 5 songs later, "Heartbreak 101", the bands’ first EP, was finished. The record has since been featured on BBC Radio’s Introducing with Tom Robinson, along with numerous on-line and print publications. Having the EP under their belt the brothers went about translating the record into a live performance. Taking songs from the CD, throwing in some new tunes and peppering the set with their favorite cover songs, the live show was a big step forward for the band. Performing as a two piece with sequencers, live keyboards, guitars and percussion to faithfully recreate their sound, the pair built a solid local following at various venues over the next year. With the encouragement of the band, audience members danced, sang along and even joined in on tambourine making the band’s live show an interactive experience that always ends with the rousing crowd participation favorite “Goodbye”. In October of 2009, after more than year of promoting the debut EP the duo took a short hiatus from the band to finish various projects that the pair was involved with. With the break behind them the brothers reconvened to begin work on a new set of recordings based off of songs from their live shows. Working off and on for the next six months the band slowly put the finishing touches on their new EP “Electrons Oppose”. Slightly quirkier and warmer than the first record, the EP still retains the definitive Berkeley Heights sound. With a scheduled release in November 2010 the band is now back at work on a new live show. The pair is also working on music videos for two new songs and an internet radio/press campaign that kicks off in October 2010.
